Making Faith Tangible: The Children's Inn at NIH
We are constantly awed by the stories our Makers share - stories of courage, passion, connection, and resilience. We are so proud to spotlight The Children’s Inn at NIH and their work spreading hope and courage to all patients and families that stay with them.
The Children's Inn at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) uses MyIntent as an activity to support and uplift children as they fight through daily challenges. Amani, a 13-year-old boy from Kenya who is undergoing treatment at the NIH in Bethesda, Maryland, is one such story.
Amani chose, “FAITH because my family and I had faith that I will get a transplant in one of the best hospitals in the world. HOPE because we kept on hoping that I would get a treatment for my sickle cell disease.”
Amani gifted his WORDs to the First Lady on her visit to The Children’s Inn at NIH, “And as you can see, mine has been inscripted with the same one. So we share the same.” Upon hearing this, she looked up at Amani with a heartfelt smile. “I will think of you. And I will pray for you.”
While you can’t physically touch faith or courage, a child can look down at their bracelet and see a physical reminder of the traits they’ve chosen to own. It’s something tangible the children can hold onto during treatment.
And sometimes, what’s needed most after a long day of doctor visits is an activity where the children “can just be kids.” Aisha shared how this “adds to the magic that we have here at the Inn because we try to provide an environment that allows a family to be a family.” At times, that’s just the right prescription.
